Tattoos - Then and Now

by ted tedlinger

Tattooing has been around since the time of early man.So have thoughts of tattoo removal.People of various cultures around the world have tattooed themselves for hundreds of years to show tribal affiliation, status, punishment or as a show of a lower social status. Many of Japan's heroes from ancient times had entire body tattoos. Some of those designs are popular to this day among certain members of Japanese organized crime.

Tattooing made its way to Western Cultures very slowly, becoming popular in Europe after the explorations of Captain James Cook into the South Pacific and Polynesia in the 1700's. After several periods of rising and falling popularity, tattooing has made a comeback as a popular form of body decoration to show individuality or to indicate an affiliation of one kind or another. It is estimated that up to 25 million Americans have one or more tattoos.

A tattoo is created when ink is deposited under the skin. The ancient Polynesians and Japanese used hand held bamboo shoots and needles do this.Today, tattoo machines puncture the skin between 0.6 mm and 2.2 mm. deep. The ink pigment is then absorbed, and deposited into the second layer of skin.

Today's tattoo ink is composed of pigment in a solution that is 80% alcohol.Ink is classified as a food additive by th FDA.Foreign bodies are normally attacked and killed by the immune system but ink pigment is to large on a molecular level and makes the immune system ineffective.

Everyone has a different for getting a tattoo. Some get them due to peer pressure. Others as a sign of their rebellion. Many just feel better about themselves when they get their tattoo.

Problems can come up with permanent body art. Some people have the misfortune of having the artist make a mistake on their design. Sometimes both design and artistic quality are not up to par. There is also the problem of amateur tattoos. Non-professional work is usually a problem.

Sometimes people just stop believing in the idea behind the tattoo or no longer have a bond with the person whose name is written on their skin. Tattoo removal is sometimes needed to get or keep a job. Whatever the reason, people often regret getting a tattoo. Removal is sometimes the only option and the various practical methods, i.e., laser, tca products, removal creams, dermabrasion and incision must be studied.
