Should You Talk to Men and Women Differently About Your Product?

by Marsha Friedman

You probably chat with both men and women just about every day, right? Do you know if they are hearing your message in the same way, or do men and women understand things differently?

And when it comes to the selling of your products or services, is it smart to speak to them different?

Many public relations experts believe this as a fact. Marsha Friedman, Chief Executive Officer of EMSI, a national publicity firm says that, "The way we are made up and the way we're raised leads to the fact that men and women can process information very differently."

When it comes to the men in society, the start with the most important point and go into further detail only when pressed. This is due to their nature which is that they tend to take off extra detail. Marsha Friedman adds, "On the other hand, women love the details! We as women like to hear what everyone said, where they said it and anything else that proves to be significant to the event." Many times these observations are overlooked!although they are steeped in fact. Marsha Friedman adds, "If you have a broad market that encompasses both men in women, you really need to focus on how you communicate your message to them." And if you are going to do electronic media (TV and talk radio) you should be even more mindful!

Consider, for example!'Report Talk Versus Rapport Talk'

Along the lines of the above 'outline versus detail-rich' way of speaking I mentioned, women place great value in personalizing conversation. Men apparently don't.

So how can you use this when you are interviewed next on television and talk radio?

Assuming that's actually the case, how could you use this in media interviews or even your marketing? If you are targeting women, try using testimonials that tell satisfied customers "life changing" stories that really evoke emotion.

On the other hand, when focusing on the male market, get to the point! Marsha Friedman adds, "With men you need to tell them how things work, why they work and their future usagethings like that."

And what if you're speaking to both men and women? The best idea is to combine the two communication methods. Be conversational and give out the main points to your product. Now you have some tips that will help you connect with your tv or radio audience! If you would like to learn more about gaining national media exposure for your company, product or service, without the financial burden of monthly retainers, Marsha Friedman is available to be of service .
