Persian Rugs - What To Look For When Making A Purchase

Oriental rugs were being woven as early as 5th century B.C. The earliest were woven in Asia and Europe. The weavers who wove them were highly talented. Persian rugs are a highly coveted home accessory that is priceless and beautiful. The elegance and style of these rugs is what makes them popular. There is a special technique that goes in to weaving a Persian rug by hand.

Most of the Persian rugs are being woven over the centuries in the present day Iran, which went by the name Persia in the earlier days. The material used for these exquisite hand woven carpets could be wool, cotton or silk. There have been several centers of Persian rug production in Iran over the years. They are Tabriz, Kashan, Herat and Kerman.

Tabriz rugs have symmetrical patterns and an ivory background with blue and red colors used for its design. Carpets with pictorial designs from the mythical past are woven. Quality of these carpets is measured in terms of number of knots per square inch, which could vary from 75 knots per square inch to 110 knots. They are made of cotton or silk. The silk carpets are highly prized and more expensive.

Kashan is known for its beautiful silk carpets. They have a single medallion in the middle and floral motifs, wines, flower stems and leafs woven as patterns. Some of these carpets have designs of animals woven into them. Kashan carpets are some of the most expensive in the world. Old Kashan carpets are of very good quality. They generally come in sizes of 4x 6 and 8x 6.

Herat rugs have intricate patterns of vines, floral designs, and patterns woven in them. They are produced in an array of charming colors. All Persian rugs are handmade, and woven with a single knot technique. Baluch rugs are made by nomadic tribes that live in Iran. They have been producing them for over 2500 years, and are made of rich colors such as navy blue, ivory, and red.

If you are looking for a hand knotted rug with geometric patterns, animals or plants, consider a Shiraz rug, made in central Iran. The main color of these rugs is red. Another possibility would be a Wiss rug, made by tribes in Iran in the Village of Wiss. These boast designs of flowers, plant life and gardening activities are the main pattern.
